Martin County Commissioners have approved a lease agreement with the Martin County Fair for office space at the fairgrounds for the 4-H program. The lease, set at $6,000 annually for a five-year period, is a plan that has been in the works since December. A committee of  citizens has filed the necessary papers to initiate a recall election of Tom Hawkins, Fairmont councilman at-large, stating his recent actions constitute “an abuse of power.” The petition is referring to Hawkins initiating efforts to eliminate the current in-house city attorney position, held by Elizabeth Bloomquist for 30 years, without any prior discussion or input from the majority of the other council members. 19 Committee members bear the responsibility of collecting 881 signatures of Fairmont citizens who are registered voters. On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, Martin County Emergency Management convened key county departments, city and township representatives, as well as other agency stakeholders in a 2-hour Planning Team Meeting for the update of the Martin County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP). The meeting was held at the Martin County Law Enforcement Center in Fairmont and was facilitated by the University of Minnesota – Duluth Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC) project team who are leading the update of the County plan.
