Martin County commissioners on Tuesday approved a 2020 property tax levy of $17.1 million, an increase of 4.92 percent from this year. The board also approved a 2020 budget. The Fairmont Economic Development Authority has approved a $25,600 loan that will aid the succession of B&B Gas Piping of Fairmont. B&B Gas Piping is owned by Marlin Bliesmer and Matt Bliesmer. With Marlin looking to retire, the loan was requested by Mike Bliesmer to buy the building at 912 N. State St. He will then lease the building to B&B as a means of buying into the business.  State Representative Bob Gunther (R-Fairmont) said Minnesota’s economy continues to be positive as economic experts found a projected $1.3 billion budget surplus for the remainder of the 2020-21 budget cycle.  “We’ve seen a surplus in 12 of the past 13 budget updates,” Gunther said. “To me, it shows we’re collecting plenty from the taxpayers and that’s there no reason to consider any form of tax increase next session.”  According to Minnesota Management and Budget, a better than expected close to the last biennium, an improved revenue forecast, and a small decrease to estimated spending create the $1.3 billion forecast surplus. THE FAIRMONT AREA SCHOOL BOARD TUESDAY APPROVED CERTIFICATION OF A DECREASE OF 2.91 PERCENT IN THE PROPOSED 2019 PAYABLE 2020 TAX LEVY. THAT IS A TOTAL OF $166,414.98 DECREASE FROM THE PAYABLE 2019 CERTIFIED LEVY. THE PROPOSED 2020 PAYABLE 2020 LEVY IS AT $5,545,482.33. Mayo Clinic Health System recently donated $4,000 to Martin County Public Health to go toward establishing a mental health first aid program. The mental health training will be delivered to medical, school and city staff. “Treating a patient’s physical health is just one piece of a person’s overall health and well-being,” says James Hebl, M.D., regional vice president of Mayo Clinic Health System. “We are proud to support Martin County Public Health in establishing a training program dedicated to mental health awareness and education.”
