The Fairmont Area School Board approved an early release for high school seniors who have assignments completed, fines paid and detention made up. Seniors have been getting out of school several days earlier than the rest of the student body for the past several years. The last day of school for seniors will be May 29. The rest of the students will be in school through May 31.
Three people at Fairmont Area were recognized for their 25 years of service to the district at the school board meeting Tuesday. They are: Lois Harbo, Derek Spear and Melinda Stewart.
Harbo has served as a Title I aide and has worked with students ranging in age from preschool to seventh grade. She also has served as a lunch hour recess aide and provided input for the Fairmont Elementary School remodeling project.
Spear is a licensed K-12 physical education teacher and has taught every grade level while at Fairmont. He currently teaches students at the elementary school, where he has started several new programs.
Stewart is licensed in Spanish, reading and English as a second language. She has served as a Spanish teacher all the years she has been in Fairmont but she also has worked as a literacy coach and reading interventionist.
14 teachers were recognized for receiving tenure. A teacher in Minnesota receives tenure after working in a school district three years in a row and being offered a fourth year.
The board accepted some donations:
$310 from Arby’s, which will be used for the high school Cardinal Fund.
$549 from General Mills as part of its Box Tops for Education Program to be used to support PETT at the elementary school.
150 new books at a value of $2,032 from Joy Rachuy to the elementary school media center.
