Fairmont’s Park and Street Department crews have started preparing the city’s numerous recreational areas for warmer weather. Nick Lardy, park and street superintendent, told the Fairmont Park Board on Tuesday that all but three of the city’s many docks have been put in. Bases are going in at the Winnebago Avenue Sports Complex, and work on the dugout roofs and extending the backstop will begin soon.“Hopefully, around May 1, we will start opening things up. We want to get the shelter houses open by the fishing opener on May 11,” he said.

Ed Willett, who serves on the Kids Just Want to Have Fun committee of Project 1590, updated the board on the progress of the mini golf course.

“Our goal is to break ground this summer,” he said.

The group has raised more than two-thirds of the needed funds and is waiting to hear from seven grant applications by the end of June. The committee is still seeking donations of putters, and anyone who would like to donate can drop the equipment at the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce office.

Willett said the goal is for play to be free with a small deposit on the equipment. Equipment can be checked out at the Martin County Library with a library card, at the CER office and at the Fairmont Aquatic Park during open hours.

An Arbor Day program will be held 1:30 p.m. April 26 at Memory Park, across the street from Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center. There will be a brief program, and an Ohio Buckeye Tree will be planted. The program is open to the public.
