Minnesota health officials on Sunday reported 1,364 new cases of COVID-19 and 40 additional deaths due to complications from the virus.
The state’s death count is the 22nd highest in the country overall and the 28th highest per capita at about 107 deaths per 100,000 people, John Hopkins University researchers reported. State officials said 24 of the newly-reported deaths occurred in long-term care facilities.
A total of 77 deaths were reported over the weekend, when reported numbers typically drop.
Sunday’s update increased the number of positive tests to 446,280 and the number of deaths to 5,927 since the start of the pandemic. One in every 528 people in Minnesota tested positive in the past week, researchers said.

The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Iowa has dipped below 500 for the first time since October.
The Iowa Department of Public Health said 474 people were being treated for COVID-19 in hospitals Saturday, down from 505 on Friday. The last time the number of people hospitalized was below 500 was on Oct. 18.
The state reported 730 new cases and two deaths Sunday to give Iowa a total of 304,852 cases and 4,323 deaths since the pandemic began.
Over the past week, Iowa has been reporting an average of 941.43 new cases per day. That is up from two weeks ago when the state was reporting a seven-day rolling average of 883 new cases per day on Jan. 2.
