Martin County commissioners

Martin County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a preliminary property tax levy for 2019. The figure originally was $16.4 million, or a 3.94 percent increase over 2018, but the board only approved a 2.94 percent increase, in an effort to decrease spending.

Commissioner Dan Schmidtke made the motion to lower the increase by making a transfer of $158,000 from the capital improvement fund. The fund would then contain about $240,000 for 2019. Board chair Tom Mahoney cast the lone dissenting vote preferring to make the reduction at the December deadline.

The board heard from Judd Schultz, housing services director at Minnesota Valley Action Council. The board approved a request from MVAC for additional funding for the Small Cities Development Program for Martin County in the amount of $1,700. The funds will be utilized for a one-time rehabilitation project for a household in Fairmont.

Commissioners heard from Dunnell Mayor Dan Nelson regarding financial assistance to help with demolition of a dilapidated building located at 110 E. Wenberg St. in Dunnell. The board passed a resolution approving $10,000 to share in the demolition cost.

The board received news from Martin County zoning official Pam Flitter, who announced that the county has received a $46,019 grant for administering the septic program, as well as for septic upgrades to homeowners who qualify.
