A group of local residents are planning Fairmont’s Big Sleep Out, a winter night spent outdoors to draw attention to the need for emergency crisis housing in the area. From 5 p.m. This Saturday Dec. 7 until 9 a.m. Sunday Dec. 8, a contingent of hardy souls will camp out without tents at Citizens Park next to Fairmont City Hall to raise funds and coordinate efforts for temporary emergency shelter. THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD MEETS TUESDAY AT 9 AM. THE COMMISSIONERS WILL CONSIDER PROSECUTION CONTRACTS FOR THE CITIES OF TRIMONT, CEYLON, SHERBURN, WELCOME AND GRANADA,  AND REMAINING JOB CLASSIFICATION APPEALS FOR COMPENSATION STUDY. THE BOARD WILL CONSIDER ELECTED OFFICIAL SALARIES AND WILL HOLD ANOTHER BUDGET WORK SESSION AT TUESDAY'S MEETING AT THE MARTIN COUNTY COURTHOUSE. A new health coalition is formed between providers in Faribault and Martin Counties. Human Services of Faribault and Martin Counties, Mayo Clinic Health System - Fairmont and United Hospital District are teaming up to develop the required Community Health Improvement Plan. Prior to the coalition forming, each county would develop their plans individually. FAIRMONT SCHOOL BOARD GRANTS

The Fairmont School Board on Tuesday discussed donations from Partners In Education. The group has given more than $150,000 over the years to fulfill teachers’ requests for activities and equipment. This school year, PIE donated $28,000. However, only $24,477 in requests were received. To obtain PIE grants, teachers and staff at the elementary and high schools make proposals. This year, some of the money went toward CER youth scholarships, beginner reading books, sensory needs equipment, flexible classroom seating, a camera for the yearbook, books for Spanish reading library and iPads.
