A living symbol of hope, resilience, and remembrance is coming to Fairmont High School, thanks to the determination and vision of 11-year-old Natalie Flaherty. On Thursday, May 29 at 1:00 PM, the public is invited to a special ceremony at the Performing Arts Center at Fairmont High School, where an Anne Frank Sapling—grown from the chestnut tree that once stood outside the secret annex where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary—will be planted. This rare honor places Fairmont among just 16 locations in the United States to receive a sapling from Anne Frank’s original tree. Other locations include the U.S. Capitol, the 9/11 Memorial, the United Nations Headquarters, and prominent Holocaust memorials.

The sapling’s journey to Fairmont began with Natalie Flaherty, whose passion for history and social justice inspired her to advocate for the project. Through her leadership and perseverance, Natalie secured Fairmont’s place among some of the most respected commemorative sites in the country. This tree is a reminder that one voice—even a young one—can make a powerful difference Natalie’s commitment embodies the very values Anne Frank stood for: courage, compassion, and a belief in a better future. The event will feature remarks from The CEO of the Anne Frank Center USA- Lauren Bairnsfather, school and district officials, and Natalie herself, along with music and readings in honor of Anne Frank’s legacy.

This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to witness history being planted—quite literally—in southern Minnesota soil. Donations are welcome and will help fund, signage, benches, a fence and day of expenses for the tree. Please make checks payable to Fairmont Area schools, and note “Anne Frank Tree planting”.
